"T" Tops From Northern Pickups...What Do We Think? (& Comparison With PAFs)
Check out these pickups here: www.northernpickups.co.uk/t-topclone We all know about PAF pickups, right? And then Gibson got their patent, and they morphed into Patent No. pickups? But...what came next? Well, c.1967 Gibson re-tooled their classic humbuckers and changed a few things about them - and as part of the new bobbin tooling, "T" shapes were embossed into the top. So, you can see where t...
White Whale V2: Crazy Tube's Updated Reverb/Tremolo Beast!

Find out more about this pedal here: crazytubecircuits.com/white-whale-v2 In the world of analog guitar effects, one 'genre' in particular has always been tricky to get right: reverb. It can't really be done effectively with BBD's; so where does that leave us? Spring reverb is the go-to for guitarists, but as anybody who has ever seen a Fender 5G15 will tell you, the tanks & hardware need to be...
Wizz P90's In My Gibson ES-330...My Favourite Recorded Tones So Far?!
You might have seen my lovely Gibson ES-330 '61 VOS Reissue on the channel before - but probably not very often. It's a gorgeous instrument, but despite the mods I've done to it, it's always never quite gotten there in terms of sound and playing experience. But I've recently made a couple of big changes to it - and wow, has it made a difference! Firstly, Matt at Monty's in Cheltenham fitted it ...
Jim Hagerman Put A Tube In A KLON!!
Jim Hagerman has always been his own man in the world of pedal design - and today's offering is probably the best example yet of him taking a concept and really putting his own unique stamp on it. Enter the TUBEKLØN - yes folks, Jim has put a tube into a Klon!! Long gone are the 'mythical' Germanium diodes; the clean boost mode; and the rudimentary Low Pass Filter. All of the clipping here is b...
Bolt & Forge Ol' Ephraim Germanium Sustainer...Crunchy Distortion Heaven!
A couple of months ago, I demoed a killer overdrive pedal called the Appaloosa...and now, the good folks at Bolt & Forge have sent me its brother to check out! Introducing the Ol' Ephraim Germanium Sustainer! It houses four hand-selected Germanium Diodes, and sonically sits somewhere between a fuzz and distortion. It has the thick, scoopy, woolly tones of a Big Muff; the mid-focussed sizzle of ...
Do Nashville ABR-1 Adaptors Ruin Vintage Tone?

A few months ago, I made a video comparing the Four Uncles Restorations ABR-1 bridge to some of its competitors - with some interesting results. Specifically, I mentioned in the intro of that video...
Fitting A Bigsby Tailpiece To My ES-330 (w/@Montysguitarsandpickups)
I first became aware of the Gibson ES-330 when I saw @GuitarDotCom's video of @WeAreLittleBarrie's 1962 ES-330 - and I absolutely fell in love with how it sounds. Barrie is a killer player of course, but his guitar really sings too. So I've tweaked my guitar (to my ears, at least!) to sound as close to his as possible. This has also recently involved fitting a set of Wizz P90s, which have been ...
Bolt & Forge Appaloosa - Tasty Germanium-Fuelled Crunch

I first came across Bolt & Forge in a thread over on TheGearPage, and the (new) company's line of pedals looked very impressive. Hagerman Gamma Radiation (The Double DISTORT!)
I've been a fan of Jim Hagerman's designs for a good while now - he really has a knack for voicing circuits to really work with minimal controls. Following in the footsteps of others trialling the concept, the Gamma Radiation doesn't arrive on your doorstep a...

From my point of ear, i consider the Power Stage Tubes as a kind of compressor besides to give an specific voice like the difference between 6L6 and 6V6. It is clear that every piece within an amplifier counts, but if your power tubes is in harmony with the tubes you chose for your preamp and the type of sound that the brand decided to give to that amplifier, magic will happen!

Theoretically should be absolutely fine - though the speaker will be right at its limit, so will likely be compressing a good amount.

The funnest part of moving polepieces for me has been the change in attack. Polepieces down, the pickup seems rounder on the pick-strike and more fit for sustain. With them up, the attack is way heavier w/ an immediate low-end “bump” that goes away (like a compressor knee), but you can over-do this. It can sound a bit like the bass overload from someone speaking too close to the mic. It kinda sounds like a WAY overwound single coil. It’s worth noting that the way it changes EQ is more nuanced than just adding treble, too. Polepiece changes seem to make some highs increase, and others decrease, in a strange but predictable way. Best way to hear it is to “feel” the difference as you try it yourself! ^some food for thought, for those trying this out

Adding a shim just made more space between frets and ringing strings as it will make if you loosen trussrode which eliminated the ringing of the strings on the first frets. That's all the difference in the tone

    • @JoePerkinsMusic

Truss rod controls relief in the neck; shimming adjusts the neck angle. Very different things.

I came here to learn more about pots thanks for the informative video. I had some New Pots installed on my LP by a technician as they were making buzzy sounds intermittently. I did not specify what I wanted as I don’t know much about pots at the time. The new ones behave differently to my old ones. Old ones you can hear a really gradual volume increase from 0-10. The new ones you hear a small increase between 0-4 and then 5-10 has sudden more noticeable volume increases. What should I be looking for in terms of Taper to get another set of volume pots that behave like my old ones ? Thanks so much for anyone reading this.

The monty's seem much more 'direct' sounding. OX4's are more mellow and subdued (which can be a good sound, depending on what you're looking for). To me the OX4's are 'sweeter' and more muddy, while the Monty's have more clarity and string definition with more brashness.

Once again, a great comparison: thank you ! The Hex sound to me a bit brigther and slightly more articulate. The rounds are a tad more bassy and smoother. I think the rounds woud possibly fit better on single coils/T type guitars and the Hex on darker sounding guitars ? Feel: yes the round core feels just a bit slinkier to me too... Good remark on binding the round wounds before snipping ! Cheers !

Its important to rememer the Hertiage G12M20 and Greenback Reissue G12M25 are reissues of different vintage Greebacks . The Greenback started out as the G12M20 and later became the G12M25 and both versions sound different . The G12M20s were made from 1965 to mid 1968 then spec and design changes were made in mid 68 such as changing the Voice coil formers and making changes to the doping . The 2 modern Greeback G12M reissues are representing different vintage Greenaback models . The differences you hear between these 2 reissues is in line with the differences you would hear between the 2 vintage versions

The Heritage can't be an exact copy of the original 60s and early 70s Greens because the Heritage speakers use different cones . The originals had Pulsonic cones but those are no longer Available because the Pulsonic factory burned to the ground in Mid 73 and the Pulsonic recipe and production methods were lost and nobody has been able to successfully replicate the pulsonic cones . The tone is in the cone.
